Electronics Workshop Placement
Hear from Han who completed a one-week work experience placement in the Electronics Workshop at the LMB:
Can you explain what your placement at the LMB involved?
I completed my placement with Andy Howe in the Electronics Workshop, where I learned how to design and manufacture a circuit board, solder electronic components, create and 3D print models, and programme on the Arduino to control the circuit board as intended.
How did you feel on your first day?
I was nervous when I first came to the LMB as I didn’t know what to expect when I first entered and I didn’t have much interaction with the work group before, but they were all really friendly.
What were some of the most memorable or rewarding moments during your placement?
The most rewarding moments were successfully completing the soldering on my circuit board after fixing all the excess solder, and then seeing the whole project come together once I had finished the coding and assembled it with the 3D-printed components.
What do you think you have gained from your first time at the LMB? And what direction do you think you might want to go in next?
I gained new skills, such as soldering and 3D modelling, which I hadn’t had the opportunity to learn before. The placement was really useful because it introduced me to different types of engineering careers and the pathways into them. As a result, I’m now considering either applying for a degree apprenticeship or following the traditional university route.
What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about coming to the LMB for work experience?
Try everything and enjoy the week as it’s a great place to be! Be curious, ask lots of questions and make the most of the placement as it’s a great opportunity to learn.
