Support Services
The Operations Group delivers a wide range of non-scientific support services that enable world-class research. Dedicated staff provide expert management of infrastructure, services and compliance, reducing administration and thereby allowing the scientists to focus on delivering cutting-edge research.
Overseen by the Chief Operating Officer, these key support services include:
Archive: maintains the LMB’s physical and electronic historic material and serves as a key point of contact for LMB alumni.
Estates & Facilities: maintains the building fabric and ensures that services, plant and associated infrastructure are modified and maintained to meet the needs of scientific programmes. The team is also working with the MRC to deliver the estates decarbonisation strategy. It is also responsible for Reception and Restaurant services in the main building.
Finance: provides comprehensive financial management, grant oversight and budgeting.
Health & Safety: provides a source of competent advice on all aspects of health and safety associated with the work carried out at the LMB.
Human Resources: supports managers and employees in creating an inclusive working and learning environment through effective people practices.
IT: provides hardware, software and network support, managing security, backups, AV systems and the phone system.
Laboratory Services & Purchasing: manages the purchase of essential materials, equipment and services, while resolving supplier and order issues. The team also provides support through asset management and the maintenance of laboratory equipment.
News & Public Engagement: produces external communications highlighting the LMB’s people and scientific output and supports LMB members to engage with society through a range of public engagement activities.
Postgraduate Office: supports PhD students and student placements at the LMB.
Research Office: manages technology transfer, research governance and external collaborations. The team also handles research-related contracts, including material transfer agreements, IP protection and funding applications.
Scientific Operations: offers support across different areas, such as risk and corporate governance, travel, scientific seminars, event organisation and internal communications.
Scientific Services: incorporates Domestic Services, responsible for cleaning and waste disposal; Stores, which stocks over 650 items, manages deliveries, biological shipments and maintains critical supplies of liquid nitrogen, dry ice and gas cylinders; and Sustainability to help the LMB deliver its Net Zero ambitions by 2050.
