Tissue Culture

The Tissue Culture facility provides expertise and access to insect and mammalian cell culture, primarily for heterologous protein expression. The resultant recombinant proteins and protein complexes allow cutting‑edge in vitro biochemical reconstitution experiments and structural studies.

The facility maintains insect and mammalian cell lines and provides large-scale cultures, reagents and stocks to users for baculovirus work. The tissue culture rooms are maintained and stocked so that users can prepare their own cultures. LMB scientists have expressed and purified single proteins, multi-protein megadalton-sized complexes and membrane proteins for structural analysis.

The Tissue Culture facility provides training to users in aseptic cell culture techniques and CRISPR-based genetic modification. It also collaborates on projects to integrate new methodologies to optimise protein expression.
