Application Checklist

Before completing the University of Cambridge application, please make sure you have checked the information outlined below.

Entrance Requirements

We expect graduate applicants to have:

  • A degree in a relevant subject.
  • Two academic references, preferably one from senior university staff at your most recent university and one from a senior scientist who has supervised your practical research.
  • Fluency in the English language – if English is not your first language, we require a recent language test equivalent to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and scores equivalent to at least 7.0 overall with not less than 7.0 in speaking, listening and writing, and 6.5 in reading.
LMB PhD Project Selection

Enter the supervisors’ names into the Research section of the University portal application form, stating your order of preference. This should be typed into the free text box ‘Research Supervisor’. If you wish to apply to more than one project, you can enter the names as shown: Dr Milstein (1st) / Dr Sanger (2nd) / Dr Sulston (3rd).

Complete an LMB Statement of Interest form for each supervisor/project you wish to apply to. Save the statement(s) in a single PDF format, ready to upload to the University Application Portal.

Sources of Funding

We recommend that you find out more about all sources of funding before applying online.

If you wish to be considered for Gates Cambridge Trust funding, please ensure that you follow their guidance.

The University Application Portal will prompt you to apply for LMB-funded studentships, University-wide funding and College studentships.

Supporting Documents

Ensure that you have the required supporting documents ready before filling in your application in the University Application Portal.

Only upload .pdf format documents (not password protected).

Supporting documents that you must upload:

  • An up-to-date CV – including names and addresses of two academic referees.
  • University transcripts – if available, or module/exam results to date if you are currently an undergraduate student.
  • Your language test certificate (the University Application Portal will prompt if required).
  • Completed LMB PhD Statement(s) of interest form with statements for all projects within one document.
  • If you wish to apply for Gates Cambridge Trust funding, you will need to upload a Research Project.

Documents that ARE NOT uploaded by you:

  • References – i.e. letters of recommendation from two referees. One reference should be from someone who has supervised your practical research and one referee must be able to comment on your academic performance.
  • If you wish to be considered for Gates funding, you will also need an additional reference (see Gates Cambridge guidance).

You should let your referees know well in advance to ensure they keep to the deadlines. Add your referees’ contact details during the application process in the University Application Portal; both referees will receive an automated email giving access to the University’s online Electronic Referencing System.

References MUST be uploaded by the application deadline. We recommend completing your application at least a week before the deadline to give your referees time to submit their documentation.

Only complete applications including all supporting documents will be considered.

Please do not email supporting documents or project choices to us – follow the online instructions that will be available with your application via the University Application Portal.
