Ahead of the Curve: Women Scientists at the LMB

Ahead of the curve celebrated women scientists who have worked at the LMB, many of whom went on to have careers at some of the world’s foremost scientific institutions. The exhibition featured photos from across 60 years of the LMB, alongside inspirational quotes and anecdotes from the scientists. Many of the women are featured in Kathy Weston’s book, “Ahead of the Curve”.

Curios of 60 Years of the LMB

This exhibition brought together an assortment of unusual and intriguing items which showcased the life and work of the LMB. The display celebrated 60 years of the LMB by looking back at the major and the everyday items that tell the story of the history of the institute since 1962.

The symbolic ‘Key of the Laboratory’. The first key, dated 28 September 1979, was given to Sydney Brenner when he took over as Director of the LMB from Max Perutz. A symbolic key has been passed from Director to Director ever since.
From Bench to Blockbuster: The Story of Humira® – Best-Selling Drug in the World

It started with a fundamental scientific challenge at the LMB: understanding how the body generates billions of different antibodies and how the immune system selects the right antibody to fight an invader. It then went on to be developed into the world’s bestselling drug, Humira®. This exhibition told the story of the initial scientific research through to the practical application to medical treatments.

Setting the Stage: Development of Sample Holders for Electron Cryomicroscopy

The inaugural display in the LMB’s exhibition room showcased a major advancement conducted at the LMB. The development of microscope sample holders was crucial for moving from electron microscopy to electron cryomicroscopy (cryo-EM) and scientists at the LMB played a major role in this.
