Funding

Funding is available to prospective PhD students of all nationalities through open competition.

At the LMB, most UK students are supported by Medical Research Council Studentships. Students from overseas are funded either by studentships from their own country or from various University of Cambridge funds – including LMB Scholarships, Gates Cambridge, the Cambridge Trust, the Herchel Smith Fund and University of Cambridge scholarships.

Over a third of our graduate students secure competitive external funding.

LMB funding

MRC Studentships

We offer up to 17 fully-funded MRC Studentships. The full MRC Studentships cover all University fees and provide an annual, tax-free maintenance allowance of £23,248.

LMB Cambridge Trust Scholarships

In collaboration with the Cambridge Commonwealth European and International Trust, the LMB offers up to four Scholarships to outstanding international graduates to pursue a PhD.

César Milstein Studentships

In memory of César Milstein and his contributions to science, the Darwin Trust of Edinburgh funds one César Milstein Studentship per year.

Candidates should be of South American nationality, with preference given to Argentine nationals, and hold a First or Upper Second Class honours degree in science. The studentship is tenable in the LMB’s Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry Division.

For full details see: César Milstein PhD Studentship.

Neuberger Studentship

In memory of Michael Neuberger and his contributions to science, the Max Perutz Fund, in collaboration with Trinity College, established a studentship based at the LMB that is awarded to outstanding PhD candidates of any nationality. The successful candidate will be registered with the University of Cambridge and Trinity College.

The studentship is tenable for four years and provides an annual maintenance allowance for a single student. University fees are also fully funded.

Please note: The Neuberger studentship is not available every year. Please contact the LMB Postgraduate Office for more information.

Other funding

There are a large number of scholarships and sources of financial aid available to prospective LMB graduate students. Funds are also available for particular projects or nationals. Cambridge Africa, for example, offers advice and funding for graduates from Africa applying for courses at Cambridge.

When you apply for an LMB PhD, the Applicant Portal will allow you to indicate that you want to be considered for several major scholarships from the University of Cambridge and elsewhere.

If you wish to be considered for Gates Cambridge Trust funding (for international students), please ensure that you follow their guidance.

You will automatically be considered for any MRC funding that you are eligible for.

The Applicant Portal allows you to apply for LMB-funded studentships, University-wide funding competitions and College studentships. We recommend that you find out more about these and other sources of funding before applying online.

“I enjoyed the atmosphere, everyone was helpful, hierarchies are flat and people
are enthusiastic about their work. I had an extraordinary time at the LMB.”
